What it is

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within the 12S rRNA region of mitochondrial DNA, distinguishing it from peptides encoded by nuclear DNA. First identified in 2015, it belongs to a small family of mitochondrial-derived peptides shown to act as signaling molecules beyond the mitochondrion.

Studied in research for

Research in animal models has examined MOTS-c's relationship to skeletal muscle AMPK pathway activation and glucose transporter translocation, alongside metabolic parameters studied in models of insulin resistance and diet-induced obesity.
