What it is

VIP is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, structurally related to the secretin/glucagon peptide family. It acts primarily through the VPAC1 and VPAC2 G-protein-coupled receptors.

Research has examined VIP's role in immune modulation, circadian rhythm regulation via the suprachiasmatic nucleus, smooth-muscle relaxation, and gut and pulmonary epithelial signaling pathways.
